Caring for your new carpet

Carpet Care

The number one trick to keep your carpet looking new is regular vacuuming. Twice a week is best. This removes any grit and dirt that may accumulate and become abrasive, which leads to wear and tear.

We also recommend placing door mats at all entry points to your home or office. This will protect your carpets from any dirt or moisture on people’s shoes. Ensure their efficiency by cleaning door mats regularly too.

Aside from dirt and grit, shoes themselves can add to wear and tear. Particularly heels and rubber soles shoes. Try to move chairs around periodically and restrict people wearing sports shoes and heels in certain areas.

Carpet Cleaning

Carpets will naturally need a thorough clean by a specialist cleaning company once in a while. This will remove all dirt to bring back your carpet’s appearance and colour.

Always be sure to follow manufacturer’s instructions if you choose to clean the carpet yourself. Do a test on a small, unobtrusive area first. If a stain reappears after you’ve already cleaned the spill, you’ll need to repeat the clean and rinse, or call in the professionals.

If in doubt consult a carpet cleaning specialist. If you need any further advice, call us on 01226 304 081 or Contact Us.

Spills and stains

If a spill or stain occurs you must act fast. Gently dab the spill with a paper towel or a clean white cloth. Never rub a stain. This only causes further carpet damage and spreads the stain even more.

If you’ve soaked up the spill, now take an appropriate cleaning product and work from the outside of the stain to the centre. Use small quantities at a time. Work the product into the stain using a small, soft brush, cloth or sponge. Never pour the product directly on the stain.

Be sure to read instructions on your cleaning products, as some harsh cleaners can wreak havoc with a carpet’s colours. It’s a very good idea to do a small test on an inconspicuous part of your carpet first, just to be safe.

Once your carpet is free from the stain, blot up any excess liquid and let the spot dry. Use a hairdryer if you like. Then if the stain is still visible, repeat the process until you’re happy with the results.

Quick tips

  • Soak up liquid with kitchen roll, tissues, toilet roll or a clean cloth
  • Scoop up or scrape off any solids
  • Try to identify unknown spots prior to treatment. If unsure, use a solvent first
  • Always blot the stain, never rub
  • Always work from the outside edge of the stain inwards
  • Take care with applying solvents to bitumen-backed carpet tiles
  • When using solvents always ensure there’s plenty of fresh air ventilation
  • Always thoroughly rinse out water-based spotters with clean water
  • Dry the spot, if possible, with a hair dryer
